Dear Maria,
Happy birthday and hello from Newark! I considered posting a video as well, but it's 2:30am and I feel weird trying to record myself -- and also, I look crazy. Anyway, so I figured I'd blow your mind with a birthday haiku. I suggest you take a moment to close your eyes, take a deep breath, and prepare yourself for some serious poetic insight:
You're seven years old
But you're also twenty-eight
That's a miracle
Mind blown? Haha. Well, I just want to say that I'm grateful for your friendship, Maria. It's always lovely when I see you when I come home because you're always so welcoming and genuinely interested in how I'm doing. Ever since I met you in Chinatown that time we got locked out of Victor's apartment, I've appreciated your kindness, the way you are able to spread joy through laughter, and how you're willing to listen (even when I go on and on about how much I love Sufjan Stevens). I'm glad to have known you during my time in Philly and hope for even more fun times when I come back. wow, where to begin after that entrance....hahaha. I can't remember when exactly we met (maybe when I was 9 or 10?) But it seems like you have always been a part of my life somehow. The earliest memory of us together was when I was playing with you and Elizabeth at the Fair in Lancaster or at a church retreat together....and flashforward to high school, where I discovered you and Liz were both in orchestra with me and you performing as first chair concertmistress. And then many years later, when I was working for PUMP in the summer and lo and behold, I run into you out of the blue as another fellow teacher and counselor at that camp for the summer!
We have had so much fun and so many memories, and I am forever convinced that God put you in my life to be an older sister whose advice I never get tired of hearing. I am grateful that you have found a wonderful church community to belong to, that you are an encouraging sister and friend in Christ, and that you still get to play a part in my life.

Dear Maria's friends,
So here's the deal- Maria's birthday is coming up pretty soon. Soon, as in 4 days, this coming Wednesday, February 29th, soon. And as you all know, this particular day does not come by very often (once every 4 years, to be exact). So I was thinking it would be really awesome if most (if not all) her friends and family posted a video recording (via smartphone, webcam, camcorder) of themselves wishing her a "Happy Birthday!!!" with a brief (or long) message about anything they wanted to share (could be a fond/funny memory you had of her, what you like about her, an inside joke, etc.)
If you don't feel comfortable about doing this however, feel free to post an old/recent picture(s) you've taken with her, or a picture of yourself, or just her, and include a caption underneath.
I know that a lot of you may not be able to personally see her on this special day, so it would be so great if you can take 10-15 minutes of your time to contribute to this project- I know, and you know, that she'll really love this memorable gift.
